Event "Being Open about the Unopenable": A Milestone in Qualitative Open Science
The "Being Open about the Unopenable" was a groundbreaking event held at the University of Bristol, England, in 2023. This initiative was organized by Isabella Macedo de Lucas, a doctoral student in psychology, and Colin Yang, a doctoral student in politics, both from the University of Bristol, under the guidance of Dr. Peter Allen, a senior professor in psychological sciences.
The main objective of the event was to support qualitative researchers across various disciplines by providing them with well-informed insights and establishing best practices in ethical open science. The organizers acknowledged the importance of addressing the ethical complexity of qualitative research and sought to provide specific guidelines through six specialized workshops:
Introduction and Conceptualization of Open Science in Qualitative Research
Conducting Open Research with LGBTQ+ Populations
Conducting Open Research with Refugees and Immigrants
Conducting Open Research with People with Disabilities
Conducting Open Research with People Living with Mental Illnesses
Conducting Open Research with Survivors of Domestic Abuse/Violence
This pioneering event not only provided a platform for the critical discussion of these essential topics but also aimed to catalyze a significant shift in qualitative research practices. By offering practical guidance and ethical insights, "Being Open about the Unopenable" has emerged as a milestone in advancing open, inclusive, and responsible science.

The project faced the challenge of creating an identity that was flexible enough to incorporate a variety of themes and, at the same time, engage the audience, encouraging participation throughout all days of the event. The adopted solution was the creation of a neutral brand, placed within a speech bubble, providing a solid identity that encompasses the diversity of event topics. The various colors play a significant role in this identity, assigning a specific color to each theme and ensuring a visually striking harmony in the final event ensemble.
